On-Screen Representation Over Time
Black British Media Representation | TV, Film & Journalism Data 2023
UK newsrooms remain overwhelmingly white. The Reuters Institute and the Sutton Trust have repeatedly highlighted the lack of diversity in British journalism, particularly at senior editorial levels. This has implications for how Black British stories are told and framed.
Ofcom's diversity monitoring has shown gradual improvement in on-screen representation, but Black talent remains underrepresented behind the camera — as writers, directors, and producers. The BFI's Diversity Standards have pushed for change.
UK advertising has seen growing Black representation on screen, driven partly by consumer pressure and brand accountability. However, representation in creative leadership roles — art directors, creative directors, and agency heads — remains low.
Black British artists have shaped the UK music landscape — from jungle and garage to grime, UK drill, and Afrobeats. Yet despite this outsized cultural contribution, Black people remain underrepresented in the executive and business infrastructure of the industry: at labels, publishers, and streaming platforms, senior leadership is overwhelmingly white.
Black on-screen representation in UK prime-time television has doubled since 2016, rising from 4% to 8% of characters. Progress has been driven by Ofcom's diversity requirements for public service broadcasters and by audience demand — but the gains are concentrated on screen; behind-the-camera diversity has improved more slowly.
