Black British Political Representation | MPs, Lords & Voting Data 2024
The 2024 General Election returned a record number of ethnic minority MPs. While progress has been significant since the landmark 1987 election — when Diane Abbott, Paul Boateng, Bernie Grant, and Keith Vaz became the first Black MPs of the modern era — Black British communities remain underrepresented relative to their 4% population share.
Despite progress, there remains a gap between the share of the population each ethnic group represents and their share of parliamentary seats. Black British people make up 4% of the population but hold around 3% of seats.
Black British voters have historically shown strong support for the Labour Party, though this alignment has shown signs of shifting in recent elections — particularly among younger Black voters who increasingly identify as independent or are disengaged from party politics.
Labour's share of the Black vote has declined slightly since its 2017 peak, with more Black voters moving to other parties or abstaining.
Black British voter turnout is lower than the national average, reflecting wider patterns of political disengagement among communities that feel underrepresented and underserved by mainstream politics.
