Methodology and limitations
Black-Led & Black Majority UK Charities — Ranked Directory 2024
Classification methodology
UK charity regulator registers list trustees and finances but do not systematically capture or publish trustee ethnicity. Black led classification depends on explicit self-description in annual reports or on the charity website. Confidence labels reflect that constraint —
Strong
means explicit Black led governance statement;
Medium
means Black mission with documented leadership but no explicit claim;
Weak
means beneficiary focus is Black majority but leadership identity not evidenced. Income figures are from the Charity Commission register, accessed April 2026.

This directory was compiled using the Charity Commission for England and Wales register as the primary source for charity number, trustees, and latest annual income. Companies House was used for company numbers and incorporation dates. Charity websites were used for explicit Black led statements and leadership naming.
Inclusion criteria:
A charity qualifies as Black led or Black majority when at least one of the following is publicly evidenced: (1) the charity explicitly states it is Black led on its own website or in its annual report; (2) the charity is clearly constituted as a Black feminist, Black civil rights, or Black community organisation and provides evidence that governance and leadership are by and for Black people or Black and minoritised communities.
Limitation:
UK charity regulator registers generally list trustees and finances but do not systematically capture or publish trustee ethnicity. This directory covers 12 organisations — a shortfall against a target of 50, mainly because trustee ethnicity is not routinely published and many charities do not explicitly self-identify Black led governance on their websites or annual reports.
